RESIDENTS are objecting to the building of a new pavilion at a sports club in Lostock - putting plans for a major housing development in doubt.
Proposals for 306 new homes to be built on former British Aerospace land and playing fields in Lostock Lane, Lostock, were approved by planning chiefs earlier this month with a condition that Lostock Sports Club move elsewhere.
The sports club agreed to merge with Ladybridge Sports Club, in Tempest Road, Chew Moor, to create a multi-sports complex.
But residents in Tempest Road and the surrounding area are up in arms about the extension, which includes building the new pavilion and 70 car parking spaces.
If planning permission for the extension is not granted, the whole scheme could collapse.
The multi-sports complex would provide football, rugby, cricket pitches and a bowling green.
Bolton Council (Related) has received 34 objection letters and seven petitions, mainly with problems of increased traffic, too many parking spaces, more noise, and the site being within a green belt area and the effect it would have on wildlife.
Letters of support have also been sent in saying the new facilities will benefit the local community for future generations.
Alan Robins, of Tempest Road, Lostock, said: "The application provides 70 extra parking spaces - this is patently inadequate for a vastly increased level of traffic.
"It is a quiet and peaceful area and this will bring, traffic, noise and an activity level that the local infrastructure cannot support."
Westhoughton and Chew Moor councillor John Higson said: "We are talking with the residents about this because there is concern over the road safety and an increase in traffic.
"Councillors are holding a meeting on Thursday to discuss this (note- it is not a public meeting) on Thursday. It is too early to say which way this will go.
"Building on green belt land is not banned if it is for community use and sports facilities are classed as that."
Rob Whytock, project manager who has been liaising with both clubs, said: "Lostock Sports Club has been seeking to move. These proposals came along and both clubs are for it. It will increase the sport in the area and it will cater for all ages.
"The main objection is the parking and congestion, but we are working to address these concerns."
