 Travel Security Update

Sardinian Air Traffic Halted Over Bomb Scare. Italian authorities halted air traffic over the island of Sardinia for half an hour on Tuesday after receiving a false tip about a bomb on board an arriving domestic flight. Airport authorities allowed the plane with more than 60 passengers on board to land as planned in the city of Olbia, following its short flight from Florence. After passengers left the aircraft it was inspected in a separate, more remote area of the airport. No bomb was found, Italy's civil aviation authority said. Jun 20, 2007

Canada introduced a no-fly list to ground air passengers "who may pose an immediate threat to aviation security" and tried to play down concerns that the list could be abused. Airlines will be obliged to check the names of passengers aged 12 or over against the list, which was compiled using information from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as well as Canada's counter-intelligence agency.   Airbus

Parker Hannifin Corporation, a major turnkey supplier to the world's aerospace industry, has won a contract with Airbus to provided video monitoring equipment for the new A380 super jumbo. Controlled by a panel duplicated for both the cockpit crew and cabin services manager, up to 100 cameras will be positioned on the aircraft enabling a very high degree of passenger monitoring. The system allows for the images to be shared on an IFE (In Flight Entertainment) system and also on the ground via a SATCOM link. Jun 20, 2007

  Onur Air

Woman Delays Turkish Plane With Fake Bomb Warning. A woman falsely claimed there was a bomb on board a Turkish airliner on Wednesday to try to delay the flight so her husband could catch it, Turkey's Onur Air said on Wednesday. Both of them were arrested. Airline staff found out the bomb warning was a hoax in time to stop the plane from making an emergency landing in Ankara and it was able to continue to Istanbul as planned from the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, the airline said. Ankara is about halfway between Diyarbakir and Istanbul. Bomb warnings and plane hijackings are far from unknown in Turkey, where a number of radical groups ranging from Kurdish separatists to far-left militants operate. Jun 20, 2007

  Parker Hannifin, Airbus

Parker Hannifin Corporation, a major turnkey supplier to the world's aerospace industry, has won a contract with Airbus to provided video monitoring equipment for the new A380 superjumbo. The format does not replace the cockpit security doors and, as well as providing additional protection, it is expected to be of use in monitoring normal cabin service requirements, particularly on as big an aircraft as the double deck Airbus. The cameras are rotatable and can zoom into a particular seat, or just monitor a specific area. They are designed for easy snap-in installation into cabin bulkheads and galley walls. Cargo areas can also be monitored. Low light sensitivity and an optional audio is available. Mr Bloomfield confirmed that presently two airlines were taking the Parker product, known as A380 CVMS (Cabin Video Monitoring System) but refused to expand. Cost is said to be "less than $100,000 per aircraft." Parker is currently focusing on the A380 as it prepares for airline introduction. The company says it is not interested in retrofitting the system on to existing aircraft but hopes to offer it as a built option on other Airbus models. Jun 20, 2007
