From the article: “Chrysler Group has suspended plans to bring its hulking Imperial premium sedan to market due to concerns including stricter fuel economy regulations pending in Washington, D.C., and higher gas prices.
Unveiled as a concept at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Imperial was supposed to be a higher-end model positioned above the Chrysler 300C. It was projected to go to into production in 2009 at Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario, factory, which employs 3,700.
The vehicle was going to be based on the next generation rear-wheel platform called the LY that would replace the current LX that underpins the 300C, Dodge Charger and Magnum. Chrysler executives decided to scrap plans for the Imperial in recent weeks.”

somebody had better get over to shannon’s house and make sure he hasn’t done himself in…
seriously…this was the only responsible thing to do. this thing had ‘aspen’ written all over it. the timing was awful. doesn’t mean the imperial nameplate is dead…dollars to dimes it’ll turn up as a high-zoot edition of the next-generation 300…minus the extended wheelbase and accompanying weight penalty. i wonder which of the big three will be the first to realize that luxury needn’t always equate with extra size. still think a mid-size rwd platform for the masses would do really well. c’mon chrysler…take a chance. if you build it (properly)…we will come.

Rick,
DITTO on all points but one. Everything you said was very well-said. But check out the Imperial on the Allpar Website and you’ll see they report that it was to be called New Yorker. That’s because no vehicle from an American manufacturer named Imperial is going to sell in Europe, Asia or anyplace outside the U.S. Imperialism ain’t popular these days in most parts of the world…My fond hope is that sometimes abound 2012, when the company is hopefully long into full recovery, it will produce a luxury sedan along the svelte lines of a conventional version of the Nassau, one that has enough aluminum in it to get the mpg of the Lexus ES 350, or whatever in the hell they call it.
You are absolutely right about the urgent need for a new paradigm in which luxury does not equate with bulk. But try telling that to Shannon and his soul brother, C.

This was a nice car but with gas prices as they are sales would have been verry soft at best. This was not the tim,e or place for this heavy duty gas guzzler of a car, someday maybe yes but not now.

Shannon is a female not a male.Anyway,im sorry for your bad news,Shannon.I know you really loved that car.Chrysler needs smaller vehicles at this time, and not big luxury boats like the Imperial……..SORRY

I don’t think there was even close to the same buzz for Imperial as there was for Challenger, and therefore probably difficult to build a business case for this gas guzzler.
Probably a good call on this. Now hopefully we will see a diesel Wrangler pickup brought back as the SEMA pickup had huge buzz!!

Too bad… now I (a 4th Generation Chrysler guy) wont have a luxury hot rod to compete with my Caddy buds. Some of us don’t care about mileage (or what Congress thinks about cars). I still need an ultra luxurious high performance sedan… When’s Chrysler going to wise up.
WE NEED THE IMPERIAL!!

Sorry, Shannon, but I actually relieved that they won’t build this car. Chrysler is turning out to be the comeback kid and I don’t this car should be part of the line up. Good design is timeless - like the LH (cabforward) cars. Chrysler needs to build something a little more svelt.
July 19th, 2007 at 5:16 am
Too bad,but thought so,No it was not designed to be a huge seller but I kind of liked it, I dont like the looks of new cars and this thing really stood out of the boring lookalike cars of today !!!
July 19th, 2007 at 9:44 am
Im sorry but the Imperial was dog ugly.It would of sold between 2000 and 2500 units a month.Chrysler needs smaller vehicles in their lineup. If you drive by a chrysler dealership you have a choice between a 300 or a sebring. Not to much of a choice if you ask me in the small car segment.
July 19th, 2007 at 10:25 am
Chrysler should not have small cars,Chrysler should be luxury cars, throw the small cars to Dodge ideally Plymouth should have lower end small cars but it is no more ,so have some small cars for people who want tiny cars. Chrysler should have some sort of high end car,I did really like the me412.
