  Maybe it was a New Year's resolution. Maybe it's because swimsuit season is six months away. Or, maybe it's health concerns. No matter what the reason, getting in shape seems to take top priority at the start of the year.

  For some, fitness is just a gym membership away, while others need the assistance of a personal trainer who can provide anything from an exercise plan to advice on nutrition and stress management.

  Trainers say their clients need someone who will keep them motivated and track their progress.

  "A personal trainer's No. 1 job is to motivate a person to show up at the gym," said Chris Pinckley, a personal trainer and owner of Holistic Fitness in Emeryville. "If people would show up to the gym on their own, then personal trainers would be out of a job."
