For those looking for trans-Atlantic bargains this summer, it's been pretty tough going. Traveling at the peak summer time to Europe is running $1,100, $1,200 or more. Then after you get there you have to face the power of the euro against the dollar.
But there are a few economical opportunities if you have a little flexibility. Here are a few of them, each round trip and including taxes and fees:
Oslo, $731. If you can hold off until August, you can enjoy Scandinavia for hundreds of dollars less than in July. There are few more spectacular places to be than Norway, and that price wouldn't be bad most times of the year, let alone summer. This fare is for Aug. 20-27 on Continental.
Edinburgh, $780, for travel starting Aug. 19 and returning pretty much any day you want, on Delta. Continental's price isn't much more than that. Remember that on Delta you can earn OnePass miles.
Amsterdam, $801, Aug. 27-Sept. 3, Continental.
Cologne, Germany, $693, Aug. 12-19, Continental.
Copenhagen, Denmark, $678, Orbitz.com, United, Continental and SAS, Aug. 14-21.
Fares to other European cities get cheaper in August as well. Try your first choice to see if it's one of them, and if it's not, try a nearby city. That could save you hundreds of dollars.
