CRYPTOCards Two-Factor Authentication Helps Clinivate Achieve HIPAA Compliance
 Los Angeles  -

As a software solution developer for behavioral health providers, clinicians, and managers, Pasadena-based Clinivate has to ensure its Clinitrak  solution met the strict security requirements of the  Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act  ( HIPAA).    In order to achieve compliance with HIPAA, Clinitrak had to incorporate two-factor authentication technology, and CRYPTOCards AuthEngine technology enabled them to do it quickly and effectively.

With behavioral healthcare agencies as clients Clinivate has to be certain that its solutions are fully HIPAA compliant, said Steve Terui, VP Development, Clinivate.    To be certain that Clinitrak met the strict criteria of HIPAA compliance, Clinivate had to be sure that confidential medical records could not be accessed by an unauthorized user, Terui continued.    Two-factor authentication would ensure that only authorized users could access sensitive medical documents.

Clinivate began researching ways to add two-factor authentication functionality to its Clinitrak solution.    The ideal method would be to build in the two-factor authentication functionality within Clinitrak, as this would provide the simplest and securest solution for its medical users.    But, Clinivates research soon hit some road blocks.

We began researching all available solutions but the cost was extremely prohibitive, noted Terui.    Also, most did not provide the flexible functionality that would enable Clinivate to provide its healthcare clients with high-level security without complicating the logon procedure for extremely-busy medical staff.

It was at this time that Terui began speaking with Matthew Tucker, Vice President of Sales at Pegasus Technologies, a leader in IT security solutions and services.    Tucker recommended technology from an established two-factor authentication specialist, CRYPTOCard, and explained that the company had recently developed technology that was specifically designed to enable software developers to embed    token-based, two-factor authentication in any custom application or environment, including websites, databases, and directories.

In essence, AuthEngine would provide Clinivate with flexible functionality and customization by giving Clinivate complete control over the authentication system provisioning, enforcement, and workflow entirely within the custom application.    This would make it simple for Clinivate to build CRYPTOCards proven two-factor authentication right in to Clinitrak to address HIPAA requirements.

It was clear from the outset that there was no comparable solution to AuthEngine as it basically gave us everything we needed in one piece that could then be built right in to Clinitrak, Terui continued.    As a result, the client would just see the physical token, and everything else comes as part of Clinitrak.

AuthEngine provided a major improvement in productivity and cost over traditional APIs that simply build a bridge between the custom application and a stand-alone authentication server.    With AuthEngine there would never be a need to purchase, install, and support a separate authentication server.

CRYPTOCard developed AuthEngine because it recognized that most people already have 95 per cent of the components they need for strong authentication in place, said Matthew Tucker, Vice President of Sales, Pegasus Technologies.    AuthEngine simply provides the remaining 5 per cent while requiring far less coding than building a bridge to a stand-alone authentication server, Tucker continued.    AuthEngine isnt for everyone, and if simply enforcing authentication at a VPN gateway or RADIUS authentication is adequate, then a stand-alone solution such as CRYPTOCards CRYPTO-Shield is a better choice, but for those that control their applications or want provisioning and workflow processes that revolve around the business, not the tokens or authentication server, AuthEngine makes an awful lot of sense.

Clinivate began installation, and was pleased that AuthEngine could easily be up and running on its Windows 2000 environment in less than half a day.

CRYPTOCards support staff is very responsive and Clinivate had no problem deploying the first 300 tokens to six agencies in a short timeframe, said Terui.    If an agency has 50 users we simply initialize 50 keychain tokens and send them to their administrators.

AuthEngines flexibility enables Clinivate to provide multiple access levels so that an administrator can control the complexity of authentication to meet an agencys specific requirements.

When a new user needs access to the system, an administrator simply has to generate an activation code and then send the token along with a short instruction page to the user, said Terui.    Then, once the user activates their token the administrator can be certain that the person attempting access to the system is who they say they are, Terui continued.    It really is that simple.

With the addition of two-factor authentication, Clinivate has been able to provide a solution that is not only HIPAA compliant, but one that also meets the strict security legislations being implemented by  L.A. County .

L.A. County  is mandating that all Agencies that provide services to the county have to utilize a system that accurately dates electronic claims (EDI billing), commented Terui.    As no other vendor includes two-factor authentication within its technology they cannot identify each user, and so Clinitrak is the only solution that can facilitate electronic claims online, Terui continued.    Clinivate has traditionally worked with smaller clients, but with the addition of two-factor authentication larger agencies with over 100 users have already made inquiries about Clinitrak.

By providing a user-friendly and cost-effective method of adding two-factor authentication to Clinitrak, AuthEngine has made it simple for Clinivate to provide the secure real-time medical system access its clients demand, while simultaneously addressing critical HIPAA requirements.

AuthEngine was a perfect fit for Clinivate as it provided the simplest and most cost-effective method to integrate two-factor authentication within Clinitrak, concluded Terui.    Everything Clinivate required came in one simple-to-install package which made integrating two-factor authentication a simple process, Terui continued.    Clinivate is delighted that AuthEngine has enabled it to provide behavioral health providers with an electronic medical records and billing solution that includes two-factor authentication, and would highly recommend AuthEngine to any software developer is looking for a simple way to add proven authentication functionality to their solution.
