A complaint disclosed last week in N.C. Business Court accuses a Seattle hedge fund that manages N.C. pension fund money of violating federal money-laundering laws as part of disputed tax shelter transactions.
The filing is part of a civil lawsuit that pits former Charlotte businessman Steve Puckett against Quellos Group, accounting firm KPMG, Charlotte-based Wachovia Corp. and others for allegedly drawing him into an improper shelter nicknamed FLIP.
The complaint also accuses Quellos Chief Executive Jeffrey Greenstein and Chief Financial Officer Norm Bontje of engaging in tax shelter transactions on their own behalf and improperly reporting the benefit on their personal tax returns.
Quellos spokesman Michael Gross said Tuesday that the company "will deny these outrageous claims and will continue to defend vigorously" against the lawsuit.
