A deputy commissioner for the city's Department of Streets and Sanitation recently served a three-day suspension for allowing a relative to use his city-issued laptop computer to download pornography, an official said Monday.
Streets and San spokesman Matt Smith refused to identify the suspended deputy or reveal his precise assignment or salary.
Smith would only say the three-day suspension has been served and that the suspension was short because the deputy commissioner was not the one responsible for downloading porn.
"A family member used the laptop to download materials of a sexual nature. The family member admitted to using the employee's work laptop without authorization. These materials were discovered when the employee brought the computer in for service," Smith said.
"This employee was disciplined because he had a responsibility to secure the city equipment from misuse and he didn't."
Smith was asked how the city could be certain the family member wasn't taking the fall to prevent the deputy commissioner from losing his job. "We reviewed the overall scenario and this was . . . a very plausible explanation," he said.
